Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students (warning: not a story for the squeamish)

Friday, May 13, 2005  Terry

I have to admit, I'm having some trouble with this.
local6.com - News - Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students: Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.
You say the dog was going to be euthanized anyway? First of all, let's stop using that ridiculous word. In general the word euthanasia is used in the event of putting some animal out of its misery... to spare it some pain. Though the news report does not mention it (and, well, I sort of wish it did), there's no indication that the dog was actually in any pain. Maybe it was, and I'm inclined to find out (if I do find anything out, I'll let you know). If the dog isn't in any pain, then it's simply killing a dog. Let's not mystify death anymore than we already do, okay? But I'm losing track of what I was talking about. Oh. See, once you take out the digestive track, then, yes, the dog needs to be euthanized. And yes, perhaps it would be a rich learning experience for the kids in the class. But I doubt they learned the lesson that was intended. They learned in more detail, with greater variety, with more subtlety, what animal cruelty is. Someone should get the students to think clearly about what it is they witnessed. Have them write essays and submit them to the teacher and the principal. My guess is that a lot of them were disgusted, revolted, mortified, etc. But if those emotions aren't captured and examined and talked about and written about then this whole episode is nothing but a sordid, knee-jerk "not the puppy!" response. My guess is not all the students felt those feelings I listed. They may not even have good names for the feelings they had. They may not know how to apply thought to the emotion that followed what they witnessed. What if there was a student (or parent) who wasn't shocked and outraged? Where's there voice? What about the kid who was just annoyed? The kid who can see the teacher's point? The kid so fascinated by what she's seen that she decides to become a veteranarian? A PETA volunteer? A grave robber? Hey, if you're one of the students, then write your essay. Send it to me. I'd love to see it. (Maybe we should ask that the teacher and the principal write their own essays. Here's your prompt: "What the hell were you thinking?") No doubt the dog's experience (since it was put to death) was very similar to what was going to happen anyway (it was going to be put to death). But by what mad reasoning do we make the claim that we can learn something by objectifying an animal another species? Makes me ill, that's what it does. What's you're position (you folks still reading this)? I'm kind of spinning for right now and probably blabbering (I've edited this a few times, but it still seems like blathering). So say something, will you? Link: local6.com - News - Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students. Technorati Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

At May 14, 2005 6:16 AM, Kobayashi Maru said Hitler conducted all kinds of 'experiments' with plausible-sounding, quasi-medical goals. The problem was, they were on people. The world condemned them once it knew. Firm line. Easy answer. I wonder if the world would be as quick to do so today.

The culture of death is an insidious thing. If a dog scheduled to be euthanized can be dissected for high school students today, why not a heavily sedated terminally ill grandma scheduled to be euthanized (at her own request) for a medical school class tomorrow? They'd certainly learn more. The 'benefits' would be more direct. Aren't those the absolute standards now? I wouldn't bet against it happening. In fact, I wouldn't bet against it already having happened - quietly and privately - probably in some place like Holland.

I'm hardly anti-science, having devoted much of my own education and career to it in one form or another. I'm definitely not a vegetarian animal rights freak. But this is just another slip, (or evidence of same) down the long slippery slope of worshipping the world and ourselves alone.

At May 15, 2005 6:29 AM, Pennie said Oh my gosh...I can't believe this actually happened here in the states (or anywhere for that matter), and for high school students?
This is absolutely insane, especially since kids can opt out from the frog dissection...yet they allow a living dog to be dissected...while still awake.
Sedation my ass...sedation wouldn't have stopped the pain, just made the dog woozy.
What the hell is the name of this school and how can I contact them?
Has the Humane Society been made aware of this...arghhhhh...I'm so pissed off right now.
Even in an animal hospital the animal is euthanized first before we do a necropsy.

Come on! Those things are for maniacs! Some people, I admit, are; I am not calling anyone maniac, but this practices are reserved for them. Im in total opposition of it!! It just dosn't fit.

At June 27, 2007 6:05 PM, Anonymous said Such a sick psycho SOB ! He does not be no sort of teacher to perform this for children ! for seniors? pffft they are still kids and need to have more positive performances than these performed afront of them. I consider this a heinous display that be super gross & unnecessary ! PS. I am a scientist and I have cut of animals long after they are dead for days (to save their lives, test how killed) I may safely say hardly any valuable knowledge may be gained looking at still pulsating organs of a canine while asleep. The dog was asleep not euthanized ! big humane difference ! dogs have feelings, when you kick one dont they bark and not trust you anymore... gawd sicko... psychos are allowed to teach children these days at such a early age how to be non sympathetic to living beings. Get your children out of that school and home school them ! Screw that school, superintendant & students who think they know this teacher. Look out...he may want to experiment of a sleeping child soon... Give me a break: You all dont know him as well as you think you do. He must be violent to do this. If children had done this at home and mouthed off about this (at such an early age) social services would've been phoned up by all sorta of schools & had psychiatric treatment... And there we have some mad scientist trying to impress students.... by from all I am able to gather... be pee poo level of education there (I mean they watched food travel through guts - that shit actually and therefor poo poo pee pee level of dumb). sheesh...Sincerely, Mr. Mike Henderson     Add a Comment
