Paris and Britney Should Read This / Little Dogs: Training Your Pint Sized Companion

Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion by Deborah Wood If you've ever tried to train a smaller dog, you know they come with their own set of behaviors and personalities, and trying to train them exactly as you would a Doberman or Mastiff simply will not work out. At the same time, there appears to be an upswing in the popularity of the "pocket dog," as it were, and I should hope folks taking these pups home know that if they want to live a peaceful life with said pooch, they'd be wise to seek out some training.
Marty Becker: It's not just Paris Hilton and Britney Spears with their Chihuahuas. Nowadays, everyone seems to have what my late father, Bob, used to refer to as a "knee high to a grasshopper" dog that seem attached to their hip.
Dr. Becker recommends a book for those seeking mini-canine knowledge (and for Paris and Britney to boot): Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion. It looks to be a smart read.
"People say to me all the time, 'My little dog thinks he's a big dog,'" says Wood. "The reality is that the little dog that's snarling and snarking at the other dogs is usually scared to death because he knows he's small. He behaves that way because he thinks that being aggressive makes him safer." She says that teaching a dog to look to your for leadership will make him less afraid, and much more pleasant to be around.
Got a small dog? Thinking of getting one? This book just might be for you. Technorati Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

At May 31, 2005 3:59 AM, [helenaziegenfeldt] said Im kind of disturbed by that;
the fact that the "little dog" is seen as some sort of accessory to its owner. Like a shoe. Or an earring...

At June 01, 2005 9:55 AM, Terry said I think that this is just the attitude that this book is trying to avoid. I'm a little disturbed by it myself, but I don't have much control over how people respond to their pets. Nor do I want to. But for people who need help training, I'd be happy to offer advice, etc.     Add a Comment
