Boffins Create Zombie Dogs = Scientists Resuscitate Dogs from State of Scientific Death
In case you were wondering, "boffins" are scientists (apparently this sort of news is only news in Australia, since I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere else): Boffins create zombie dogs | The Other Side | Breaking News 24/7 - NEWS.com.au (27-06-2005) Pittsburgh's Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject's veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution. The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity. But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.I always find this sort of thing unsettling. How many dogs were sacrificed so that we could make this startling revelation? And why, if it's happening in Pittsburgh, do we not hear about it around here? Furthermore, I wish they wouldn't call them "zombie" dogs. The dogs are not "zombies." I'm not particularly happy with the way this was reported at news.com.au. If anybody else knows about a better source for more information on this research, I'd love to hear about it. (I'd also like to know what the purpose of that photo is... I doubt it has anything to do with the actual dogs used in the study, since it appears to not be in a lab but somewhere out in the frozen tundra... the whole thing seems very odd... )

If you or a loved one have indeed benefited from modern biomedicine, but you are not certain whether or not the benefit had any roots from animals research, then you really are putting yourself in a situation where you might be acting very hypocritically.
In fact, most if not all medical procedures, drugs, etc., are first tested with non-humans. The logic of this is that, while all life is precious, that of any human is more precious than that of any animal. Moreover, the massive long-term potential for saving human lives from sacrificing the lives of a handful of animals is deemed by scientists to be an ethically, morally, practically, and even aesthetically positive tradeoff.
Universities and medical research centers in the Western democratic nations are regulated by an exceedingly rigorous, and scrutinizing set of institutional restrictions intended to insure ethical, and humane practices and to only provide authorization for research which is deemed by peers of the scientific community to have real value and merit.”

Research is conducted using animals, though in cases such as these where humanity benefits so greatly and ethical clearance is sort even dog lovers must support the research taking place.
