Dog Book / My Fat Dog: Ten Simple Steps to Help Your Pet Lose Weight for a Long and Happy Life by Martha Garvey

Thursday, July 28, 2005  Terry

ImageIs your dog too fat? (One of mine is... but just moderately so... I prefer to think of her as "big boned."). This book might be right up your (or your dog's) alley:
My Fat Dog: Ten Simple Steps to Help Your Pet Lose Weight for a Long and Happy Life: "America's obesity problem isn't just a people problem%u2014a recent survey indicated that 40% of America's pet population is overweight. And, just as in humans, obesity puts a dog at risk for serious illnesses such as arthritis and various skin diseases. My Fat Dog tells the truth about what dogs need to stay trim and healthy: Healthy dogs do not need to eat every day; in general, they can abstain from food for up to five days without a problem Spaying or neutering may slow a dog's metabolism slightly, but it does not cause obesity Some 'Reduced Calorie' or 'Lite Diet' dog foods may actually cause your dog to gain weight The book outlines an exercise program for your pet, analyzes which diet foods and supplements really work, and includes easy and quick tips on how to help your pet lose weight and live healthy. 20 illustrations."
I haven't read it yet (and haven't actually seen it in the bookstore yet), but it looks worth checking out. Anybody want to weigh in (oh, I've got a million of 'em) on whether this book lives up to its promise? Then say so.

At August 02, 2005 10:19 PM, Martha said Hi, Terry. It's..Martha Garvey, the author of the book. I love your dog pix. I would like to be rescued by a dog as well. I wrote My Fat Dog because I had a fat dog, and I helped her lose weight. I'm still getting the blogs' URLs straight for the books (there's one on cats, too), but I'd appreciate any feedback, and I really want to hear from owners of overweight pets. Meanwhile, the books got a nice review here:
