Festivals No Place for Dogs

Tuesday, July 19, 2005  Terry

A Neighbor Dog by Terry Bain.

A good point is made here. Just because what you're doing is sure to be fun for you, it may not be fun for your dog. The essayist is speaking specifically of festivals. Recently they've banned dogs during large festivals here in Spokane, and I frankly don't think it's a bad idea.

Journal Gazette | 07/19/2005 | Appleseed's dog days no place for dogs: "If you're a dog, though, it all becomes an obstacle course in which you're bumped and possibly stepped on and touched by people you don't know. You don't understand a word the craftsman says, so it's not interesting to you no matter how fascinating his tale is. You don't have a hankering for corn on the cob. Standing in line next to a roaring fire in the heat, breathing smoke while you wait for cornbread, is no fun. The blacksmith is just another noisy, smelly spot. The firing cannons and firing muskets startle you differently than they startle dog owners. People go "Whoa" and laugh. Dogs don't. They get scared and then nervous.

A festival is really a pretty miserable place for a dog."
By the way, if your dog enjoys a good festival, please don't take this as a negative comment, but how do you know? Furthermore, why risk it?

It's important that we remember that dogs are not people. They do not react to stimuli the same way we do. They never will, even if it seems they do at times.

Be safe. If your dog could thank you, he would.
