Xylitol Potentially Deadly to Mutt-Hound
Saturday, October 15, 2005
Terry
I've been choosing gum with Xylitol lately (usually Trident, but sometimes something else), but didn't know the dangers to my dogs until just now:Food Additive Potentially Deadly To Pets: A bulletin from the Veterinary Medical Association issued one year ago warns that Xylitol could cause life-threatening problems for dogs. Consumed in large quantities, Xylitol may produce a sudden drop in a dog's blood-sugar levels.I'm not “glad” that this happened to somebody's loved one, but I am glad to have found this news item so I can keep my gum out of the perimeter of a wandering nose (or two), and can be aware of why my dog might be acting oddly if I find tattered wrappers. Of course, they're likely to act oddly anyway. I'll keep my gum in the drawer and claim the strangeness is just plain personality.
