Terry
Over 4600 valentines were sent to chained and penned dogs this year, surpassing our goal of 4500.And that's great news. It's too bad we likely won't know how many of those valentine recipients will bring their dogs inside. My guess is a few will. And if we keep telling people that chaining their dogs for twenty hours a time is inhumane, some of them might get the picture:

Breaking the Chain: Dog 1st Aid And Awareness
by J. L. Jacobsen
A 1994 study by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), a division of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), found that chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to bite. (italics mine) A May 2003 Dog Bite Prevention Week press release from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) states, “Never tether or chain your dog because this can contribute to aggressive behavior.” A 1997 U.S. Department of Agriculture regulation prohibited people and organizations regulated by the Animal Welfare Act from keeping dogs continuously chained. It states, “The dog-tethering rule is designed to prevent the practice of permanently tethering dogs and not allowing them proper exercise as specified under the Animal Welfare Act.”That dog outside right now on a ten foot chain... it deseerves better. Give it better. For me. Stepping down now. Have a lovely Thursday.
