Roodle Bad, Gina Spadafori Good

Wednesday, March 29, 2006  Terry

I love to read Gina Spadafori's blog for many reasons, not the least of which is her ability to smack down those who need smacking down:

Dog-Eared : Mutts 9 (Mutts)
Patrick McDonnell

dogma: Sucker born every minute, part 137: Let me make it clear that I have nothing against mixed-breed dogs. I love all dogs. What I don't like is people who breed X to Y with nothing more as a goal than separating people from lots of their money. You want a smart big dog with a poodle coat? Get a standard poodle from a reputable breeder. Despite all these nonsense about “hybrid vigor,” when you're buying a mixed-breed puppy from two poor-quality purebreds you're taking on the risk of congenital disease just as much as when you're buying a purebred puppy from two poor-quality purebred parents.
Don't be separated from your money, folks. Or if you insist on being separated from your money, make sure it goes to a reputable breeder. Or better yet (maybe), get a mixed breed dog from the shelter and donate what you didn't spend on a Roodle that that self-same entity. They could use it. Believe me.
