This is a problem that's only going to get worse.

They have become popular dognapping targets because they can sell for upwards of $1,800.So long as people are paying these kinds of prices for an animal (and so long as newspapers can report on them as “fashion accessories” with a straight face), it will create a number of problems, and theft is a relatively minor one. A greater problem is the profitable puppy mill. The more that prices go up for dogs from reputable breeders, the more profitable it becomes to run a puppy mill, putting dogs and dog companions in danger of any number of disease, mental hardship, and lord knows what else (if a “bird flu” scare becomes a “dog flu” scare, you can be sure there will be hell to pay). This woman's lost dog is definitely a story worth telling and reading and considering, but it only scratches the surface of the trouble coming, I'm afraid. Of course I'm not offering any sort of solution here. My head tells me that breeders ought to be able to charge whatever the market will bear for their services. And maybe the answer is in there somewhere. The market is bearing way too much of the burden here, and the “fashionable” dog market is troubling, at best. What's your solution?
