Working Dogs Threatened by Toy Popularity

Thursday, June 15, 2006  Terry

Okay, maybe “threatened” is the wrong word. But,

Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Richard Beauchamp

icWales - Welsh working dogs threatened by popularity of the toy pooch: The Welsh terrier, Sealyham terrier, and Cardigan corgi, which were once common working dogs as well as pets, are now getting fewer, with registered numbers falling worryinglylow.Factors in the breeds' decline include toy dogs such as Chihuahuas and Shihtzus, as seen in the arms of IT girl heiress Paris Hilton and pop star Geri Halliwell, becoming more popular.
I have a feeling this is more trend than something to be too very worried about. There is something very appealing--to me, anyway--about these tiny movie stars and famous for the sake of famousness people with giant, slobbery, mixed-breed mutts. It has to happen. I'm thinking it's just about time. Any moment now. Listening to “The Ballad of Michael Valentine” by The Killers from the album Hot Fuss on badgeitunes61x15lite.gif
